Culvert infill under a railway bridge

This project in South Dakota USA, was carried out in 2000 by one of our associated companies. It had become necessary to replace an existing bridge structure with a super span steel plate bridge culvert to be back filled with soil.

Monitoring of the structure over a four year period revealed that the original granular backfill has caused settlement to the footings and a consequent distortion of the structure.

It was decided to remove the original fill and replace with lightweight 500 kgs/m3 density foam concrete. The foam concrete was placed in 2 x 60mm lifts per day, ensuring that the foam concrete would not deform the structure during the pour.
