Road Construction
This project was completed during the summer of 2006 and required us to manufacture and supply around 8500m3 of lightweight foam concrete, to form the sub-base for a new access road into an industrial estate in Hertfordshire, UK.
This area has a very high water-table and soft ground conditions and presents a real risk of settlement to any stucture. Because of this, the road was designed according to the Principle of Equilibrium and the site underwent a de-watering process - using powerful pumps - for three weeks prior to starting to pour the foam concrete.
Due to differing soil conditions in various areas of the site, two mixes were specified: One with a cast density of 250 kg/m3 and the other, 500 kg/m3. The two mixes had 28 day compressive strengths of 0.2 and 1.0 N/mm2 respectively.
As an illustration of the load-spreading properties of foam concrete, it is worth recounting that our client was delighted to tell us he had been running 200 tonne cranes around the site with no adverse movement in his nice new roads!
